What dental implants are:

Implants are different from dentures. Dentures rest on top of your gums and aren’t really a part of your jaw. Implants are placed directly into the bone of your jaw, and a process called osseointegration occurs. This is when the bone accepts the material of the implant as natural and fuses to it. Because of this, the implant provides a sturdy post to place a replacement tooth on. An implant is the closest thing to a natural tooth available through modern dentistry.

The fascinating history of dental implants:

The concept for dental implants has been around for thousands of years. 4000 years ago, the Chinese were utilizing bamboo pegs to replace teeth. Three thousand years ago, an Egyptian ruler used a copper post screwed into his upper jaw bone to replace a tooth. In France, in an old grave, believed to be Celtic, dated from 2300 years ago, an iron false tooth was found. Experts believe the iron tooth was placed post mortem. Other skulls have been found worldwide in which teeth have been replaced with a variety of materials, from shells to stones.

Dental implants, as we know them today, didn’t really begin until the 1900s, though attempts were made in the 1700s and 1800s as well. The problem was, the body often rejected the materials being used to attempt tooth replacements. However, this issue was solved, beginning in 1952. That’s when a surgeon discovered that titanium fused with the bone it was inserted into, leading to the process of osseointegration. In 1965, the first titanium dental implant was placed. Because of this success, further innovations have been made by multiple people in the dental field. Now, implants are known as the “gold standard” in teeth replacement.

Why we love them!

  • At New Health Dental, we believe that your oral health affects your overall physical wellbeing. Implants are the closest we can come to restoring your natural teeth. Because of this, we believe that implants lead to better overall wellbeing.
  • Natural looking: Dr. Fritz believes that form follows function. Because of the sturdy anchor system holding your tooth replacement in place, it behaves like an actual tooth. Because of this, it follows that the way you chew, talk, and move your mouth remain very natural.
  • Practically permanent: With an effective oral hygiene routine, dental implants may last through the remainder of your life. Dentures and bridges often need to be replaced every five to ten years, due to changes in bone structure and normal wear and tear.
  • Minimally invasive: When a bridge is placed, the teeth adjacent to the bridge act as anchors. Because of this, they must be filed down and crowns placed. This will impact healthy teeth. An implant doesn’t require any action on surrounding teeth.
